The news is awash with the drama on the high seas of the Southern Ocean. The collision between the Ady Gil of the Sea Shepherd group and one of the Japanese whaling (correction, I mean research) ships has created quite some controversy, with the ripples being felt all the way in landlocked Canberra. The Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research claims its right to conduct research into whales’ resilience to harpoons, which is fair enough…. After all, what better way to protect whales than finding out what kills them!
